Long-standing family business established in 1926, Bongi is an optical store located in the hearth of Florence and a dealer of the most prestigious eyewear and fashion brands such as Persol, Ray-Ban, Alain Mikli, Starck Eyes, Lindberg, Etnia Barcelona, Anne et Valentin, Gucci, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Bulgari.
As one of the oldest optical store in town, it has been recognized by the local government as " an enterprise of considerable interest for the tradition of selling the same kind of merchandise for over 50 years" and listed for this reason in the Registry of Historical Florentine Businesses, including the major historical activities that help preserving the traditional cultural image of the city as well as a special atmosphere of “Florentineness”.
In 1926 Martino Bongi and partner began trading optical and photographic equipment
after having worked long time as clerks,
with the intention to to follow a right path of emancipation.
In spite of the Great Depression and the rise of fascism, the store located in via Vacchereccia was running until 1944, when in the tragic night of August the 3rd, the entire neighborhood has been razed to the ground by mines of the retreating German troops.
After reconstruction, forced in 1952 to move in Via Por Santa Maria, Fazio Bongi was finally able to restart and extend his father’s business during the years of economic boom, even if the store suffered a severe damage during the 1966 flood of Arno River.
Handed down from father to son, the business is now carried out with the same enthusiasm by Martino’s granddaughter, Elisabetta and his great-grandson Arturo, who launched a unique collection of eyeglasses and sunglasses.
